Sense and Sensibility Filming Locations
Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility has been adapted to the screen on multiple occasions. And as always with British costume dramas they used their beautiful country houses as film locations.

Montacute House
Montacute House is the film location for Cleveland in Sense and Sensibility.
Montacute House is a late Elizabethan manor house in South Somerset. The architecture is unique, since it shows the development from medieval Gothic to Renaissance classical. Montacute is one of the few prodigy houses in England that is largely unchanged.

The Long Gallery at Montacute House is the longest in England. Here you will find portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. There are several gardens surrounding the house, perfect for a walk, picknick, or a fun day out for children.

Saltram House
Saltram House is the film location for Norland Park in Sense and Sensibility.
Satram House is a Georgian manor house near Plymouth in Devon. The house is designed by architect Robert Adam who expanded the original Tudor house. Saltram is one of the best preserved early-Georgian manor houses in England.
Things to see at Saltram House
The house still retains its original decor, plasterwork, and furnishings. The house also contains a rich collection of paintings, ceramics and textiles. Throughout the year the estate hosts events which can be enjoyed by the entire family. Surrounding the house are beautiful gardens and a park for cyclists, walkers and dogs.

Wilton House
Wilton House is the film location for the London ballroom scenes in Sense and Sensibility.
The land on which Wilton House stands on was granted to William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke by King Henry VII in 1544. And to this day the impressive stately home in Wiltshire is still owned by the Herbert family.
Things to see at Wilton House
Behind the Palladian south front you will find 7 state rooms which have been carefully restored by the current Earl. The house is set on an estate with landscaped gardens and an adventure playground for children. This historic home is a popular film location, the Jane Austen adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Emma have also been filmed at Wilton House as has the Netflix series Bridgerton.

Blickling Hall
Blickling Hall is a Jacobean–style stately home on the Blickling Estate in Norfolk. The estate was once owned by the Boleyn family. And it is presumed that all children (Mary, Anne (later Queen of England), and George were born at Blickling. The current house was built later, on the ruins of the Boleyn property, in 1616.
Things to see at Blickling Hall
The most important room at Blickling Hall is the Long Gallery that is now a library. The library consists of more than 10,000 volumes and is one of the most remarkable and important libraries in the country. Surrounding the house are formal and informal gardens, including a Secret Garden and secret tunnels, making it also fun for children.

Trafalgar Park
Trafalgar Park is the film location for Barton Park in Sense and Sensibility.
Trafalgar Park is a Georgian country house in South Wiltshire. In 1733 the current manor house was built after a design by John James. As of 2021 the house was for sale at Savills.

Mompesson House
Mompesson House is the film location for Mrs. Jennings’ London townhouse in Sense and Sensibility.
Mompesson House is a mansion house in Wiltshire, build in Queen Anne style. The English manor house, in the heart of Salisbury’s Cathedral Close, was built in 1701 and it is currently owned by the National Trust. The house displays the Turnbull collection of English 18th-century drinking glasses and the Bessemer-Wright collection of ceramics.

Compton Castle
Compton Castle is the film location for Combe Magna, the house of John Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility.
Compton Castle is a fortified manor house on the south coast of Devon. The castle is build in medieval times and the fortified front was added in 1520. By the 18th century, the central hall was in ruins, but this has been faitfully restored in the 20th century.
Things to see at Compton Castle
The small castle has many medival features including a mediaval kitchen. There is also a model of Sir Humphrey Gilbert’s ship the Squirrel. Sir Humphrey colonised Newfoundland and lived at Compton Castle. Surrounding the castle are a medieval style knot garden, rose garden and orchard. The castle is also fun for children with trails in the garden and costumes to try on.

Sense and Sensibility BBC mini series filming locations
In 2008 a Sense and Sensbility mini series was released starring Chairty Wakefield, Dominic Cooper, Hattie Morahan, and Lucy Boynton.
Hartland Abbey
The Hartland Abbey estate is used as filming location for the Dashwood cottage and grounds.
Hartland Abbey is a former abbey that is now a stately home in Devon. The present building includes Tudor elements and the two wings were added in 1705. The main rainges of the house are rebuilt in Strawberry Hill Gothic style. Hartland Abbey is still a lived-in family home which gives this home a more friendly and lived-in atmosphere.
In the late 19th and early 20th century the house was often visited by Gertrude Jekyll who helptedthe lady of the house design the gardens. Though the gardens were abandoned in the 20th century, they have now been restored.

Dorney Court
Dorney Court is used as film location for the Barton Park sitting room and the Delaford vicarage exterior
Dorney Court is one of the finest Tudor houses in England. The house has been in the Palmer family for more than 500 years. Little is changed in the interior layout since the 1500s. But parts of the exteriors are a Victorian reconstruction, using the original bricks.
Dorney Court opening times: The house is open for groups through private appointment throughout the year. The house is also open on May Bank Holiday Weekends and in August.

Loseley Park
Loseley Park is used as the film location for the Barton Park exteriors and Delaford library in Sense and Sensibility BBC series.
Loseley Park is a Tudor manor house in Surrey. Since its construction in the 16th century the house has been in the More-Molyneux family. The stones that were used for the Loseley Park come from the Cistercian Abbey of Waverley. Though the house is still lived-in it’s also packed with history. During a visit you can see George IV’s coronation chair, panels carved for Henry VIII’s banqueting tents, work by Grinling Gibbons, England’s finest ever woodcarver, and more. Surrounding the house are several beautiful gardens.
Loseley Park opening times: The house will be open from the 1st of May into June and July. The gardens and house are pen Sunday-Thursday in Spring/Summer.

Wrotham Park
Wrotham Park features as Norland in the Sense and Sensibility BBC mini series.
Wrotham Park is a neo-Palladian country house in Hertfordshire. It is one of the largest private houses near London and the country house is often used as a film location. Most recently Wrotham Park has been used as a Bridgerton film location.
Wrotham Park opening times: The house is not open to the public. It is currently used as a venue for private parties, corporate hospitality events, wedding receptions, product launches and presentations.
Dyrham Park
Dyrham Park is used as Allenham in the Sense and Sensibility mini-series.
Dyrham Park is a baroque country house near Bath that was built in the 17th and 18th century for William Blathwayt. The house has an extensive furniture and art collection. Including a collection of Dutch masters.

Ham House
Ham House is used as the film location for Cleveland (exterior) and Norland (interiors) in the Sense and Sensibilty mini-series.
Ham House is an early 17th-century house in the London borough of Richmond upon Thames. The house has many original Jacobean and Caroline features and furnishings making it a rare survival of 17th century luxury. Surrounding the house is a formal garden.
